My Engagement Trip to Ladew Topiary Gardens

This past summer threw me for a loop!  I plunged into one end of the summer a single woman, and tumbled out three short months later a married lady! I’ve spent the majority of the last few months consumed with wedding planning, packing , moving, and ultimately trying to start my new life out on the best footing possible.  I’ve had blue ribbon days, and days where I’d rather have a re-do, or at least an early bedtime, and some pajamas with footies.

I’m about ready for the slower pace of Fall and some comfort food, but before I prematurely start roasting a turkey, or scouring the city for the first of the season’s Pumpkin Lattes, I need to do some rewinding.

The morning I became engaged to my husband, I’d already been informed that it was going to be the day - so like all red-lettered days in my life I re-considered my outfit a few times, and then evaluated my need for a good flossing.  The clothing made it through the evaluation process, but the flossing, as usual, did not – dental role model to future generations I’m not!

After he surprised me with my ring we packed into his convertible and headed out as planned for a daytrip to Ladew Topiary Gardens.  Like most girls newly engaged girls I spent entirely too much time in the car twiddling the ring I “hadn’t cared about getting” around and around my finger.  Once we arrived at Ladew my inner landscaper took over and it was all I could do to resist the urge to fill up an entire memory card with pictures from the gardens. I strong armed my fiancee to pose for triple the amount of photos he’s usually comfortable having taken though so that was victory enough for me.

The first major topiary piece greets you at the entrance to the main house, a Fox Hunt that was hand planted, and shaped by the home’s original owner decades ago!

The unlucky target of all this hound-ly attention was sprinting across the lawn toward the main estate. I won’t even begin to discuss with you how much this made me want to plant bushes haphazzardly across my yard and shape objects of local curiosity out of them.

We followed the garden trail that took you on a tour through many private garden rooms that encircled a large green commons area with a fountain in it.  Each room had a different theme and was totally hidden from the others by walls of shrubs or trees.

The garden to the left reminded me of “The Secret Garden”

IMG 2793 1023x768 My Engagement Trip to Ladew Topiary Gardens I loved how storybook like the Rose Garden was – very Beauty like.

We enjoyed the container designs along the way – which will need dissection later in my container gardening section!

And enjoyed the fountains!

My favorite fountain was this swan creation in a reflecting pool. I can appreciate the owners love of Swans.

We wandered through a 12 foot tall evergreen chess set.

But the best part was the naturalized garden stream bed, and what they’d designed around it.  Absolutely breathtaking!

And the cherry on top; The hedge puppy in the front yard of the estate!  Or is it a moose?  A chunky White Tailed Deer? A rabbit like the shadow appears to be?  I can’t decide.

What a beautiful place!  I’m inspired enough for the next month complete.

Have you ever been to Ladew Gardens, or do you have your own special garden location that you enjoy going to?
