Fern,

I would imagine the winter weather on the east coast has the most to do with the pruning timing. January over here has our roses still in dormancy. It isn't until March that signs of life show in our roses, so March is the earliest that we recommend pruning over here. I'm a little envious at your extended growing season in sunny California, but I might miss the cold seasons if I didn't have them. Do you have any rose flowers over there yet?

I've always pruned roses in January. That's what a master gardener recommended to me a long time ago. I wonder if we have different pruning rules in Southern California as a result of our mild climate?
